ABOUT
SOUTHEAST
BUTCHER BLOCK  COOPERATIVE

Our intention is to provide producer and consumer members with a predictable and reliable way to have animals processed and brought to market for consumption

MISSION & VISION.

The Mission of Southeast Butcher Block Cooperative is to increase meat processing capacity in Alameda and surrounding areas in ways that invigorate ranch businesses, communities, and the local food economy.

Our Vision is to become the model for progressive regional food stewardship. By enabling the ethical raising of animals, local processing, and retail and distribution, the cooperative will positively contribute to the overall natural, fiscal, and social capital to serve the southeastern Saskatchewan community that we serve.

OUR HISTORY.

In 2020 Murray Carnduff, owner of Davis Meats in Alameda, SK approached a few local producers in regards to his future retirement plans and the succession of this key community business.

After 20 years in operation, he is looking to transition out of the business in the next 5 - 10 years and has concerns about where this would leave the community if there wasn't someone to mentor and take over his business.

A new butcher would be required to make many changes that Davis Meats had been grandfathered into, making it a less attractive option for someone to outright purchase the business.

The producers, realizing the potential negative impact on the community and the region, arranged a meeting with approximately 15 local producers who would be impacted. From this discussion a board of directors was formed and work began in earnest.

OUR GOALS.

Southeast Butcher Block Cooperative is applying the principles of a cooperative structure and leveraging the knowledge, experience, capabilities, and competencies of local ranchers, farmers, and butchers to increase meat production capacity to make our goal a reality.

We are seeking your support to build a viable business that will feed the community and decrease the reliance on external sources of meat and meat products. In today’s world, food security and food sovereignty are top of mind.

The Covid-19 pandemic has created increased demand for a reliable food supply, and this has contributed to disruptions in supply chains caused by a lack of meat processing and distribution. This has impacted residents in our community, and we want to mitigate these impacts, and to ensure a long-term solution that benefits us all with a reliable and consistent supply of high-quality farm to table meat products.

Our plan will see profitable returns immediately and in the future.
